I love this 3-in-1 winter coat, and I have received so many compliments about it I lost count. Great for all the different weather from fall to spring! The inside thermal liner unzips from the shell to create its jacket. It is a darker purple colour and is the perfect fall coat.
When winter finally arrived, the outer shell was great to wear on a nature hike when the weather was still around 0 degrees Celsius.
But the real test of this coat for me came on my trips to Quebec during the winter. Quebec is known for its frigid winter, and the temperatures dropped well below -10°C at times. I didn’t feel a thing! With snow falling all around, I walked the city without worrying about the temperature at all!
The outer coat has many little pockets too. I know the front zipper meant for ski passes, but for me, it was a great place to slide my iPhone, which fit inside comfortably. On the left-hand sleeve, there was another small pocket, which was great for storing some extra Kleenex, my hotel key and my Chapstick.

My stylish leather boots were not going to keep me warm on a winter day with temperatures dipping below -25 degrees Celsius and with wet slushy streets and deep snow. As someone who doesn’t engage in in-depth winter activities like skiing or snowboarding, I didn’t have a reason to buy snow pants. I wondered around in k-way pants during really cold winter travelling, and it just didn’t keep me warm. On a sightseeing trip in Port Stanley, Ontario, where the temperatures did dip to the -20 area, I came back to my hotel room with red cold legs even with several layers of thermal clothing under those pants.
I decided that for winter trips to Quebec, I would take advantage of some Boxing Day deals and buy a pair of Columbia Omni Heat snow pants. Best investment ever! They are not overly bulky and keep me warm without getting overly hot. With a pair of thermal underwear and yoga pants underneath, I found the Omni Heat snow pants kept me warm all day long.
Mix and Match Your Columbia Outerwear Colours
The great thing about Columbia is that all their men’s and women’s clothing is available in multiple colours. Colour schemes are consistent throughout all their clothing products, so if I wanted to be all fuchsia from head to toe, my snow pants came in both the same colour as my jacket’s inner liner (deep purple) and the outer shell (bright fuchsia). While I love pink and purple, I thought a head-to-toe ensemble might be too much, so I settled on a black pair of winter pants!
Plus the I received lots of compliments about the colour of my coat and how it popped against the white backgrounds of the Ice Hotel and the Carnival. Winter wear is bulky and doesn’t exactly make you feel great, but every time I wear my winter gear, I hear someone remark on the beautiful colour, and I think that “pretty in pink” feeling.
Even the Quebec Winter Carnival Queen and all her Duchesses were sporting winter looks by Columbia!
To complete my ensemble, I bought a pair of Columbia mittens in the same colour as my outer jacket. These were great to keep my fingers warm on the frigid days. I also wore a pair of sleek black Omni Heat gloves (with touch screen compatibility) as a liner so I can remove the mittens but still be able to operate my phone and camera efficiently.

Как стирать Omni-Heat

Columbia’s winter collection is decked out in gold, and it’s for good reason. The company’s latest batch of cold-weather apparel is lined in a technology called Omni-Heat Infinity, which claims to be the “gold standard of warmth” due to its ability to retain heat while providing ample breathability. After both lab- and wear-testing a piece from the collection, the Labyrinth Loop Omni-Heat Infinity Insulated Hooded Jacket (available at Columbia), we found the company’s technological claims to come in hot.
The Story Behind the Tech
Back in 2010, Columbia introduced a solution to a problem that has been troubling campers and hikers for ages: how to make your insulation layers warmer without making them heavier, bulkier, and thicker.
Since the human body generates warmth through radiation, Columbia decided to work on a technology that harnesses the wearer’s own body heat. The result? Omni-Heat.
Omni-Heat consists of hundreds of teeny little metallic silver dots. These are applied to the lining of Columbia apparel.
According to Colombia, these tinny metallic silver dots can keep you 20% warmer than ordinary layers by reflecting your body heat. At the same time, they allow excess moisture and heat to escape.
This eye-catching technology had its debut at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The brand designed custom Omni-Heat gear for the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team. The team had won one silver and two gold medals.
After that, Columbia started rolling out the Omni-Heat technology across nearly a hundred styles of accessories, footwear, pants, and jackets.
Omni-Heat apparel received positive reviews from early adopters. The greatest selling point of the technology was the fact that you couldn’t see it, but you could feel its warmth.

Here’s what Jessica had to say about the Triple Trail Shell that she received:Honestly, I’m not typically a big fan of shells on their own. I’m kind of a wimp about the cold, so I tend to like lots of insulation in addition to my layering and most shells don’t cut it. The first time I really put this coat to the test was skiing with only my baselayers and Icebreaker wool top on underneath.
Initially, my lift ride was really cold. However, as I started to wrangle Mason and Chloe down the hill, I got warm, and stayed that way. The heat lasted much longer than I anticipated, probably due to the Omni Heat.
If you’re wondering, “are Columbia jackets good” this shell really is fantastic. One of the first things that I noticed is how incredibly well it was constructed. Since I love to sew, I could quickly tell that this was a coat that was made with a lot of precision. I mean seriously, it’s sewn so well, you can barely even see where the pockets are. I also loved that it was tailored to fit a women, complete with bust darts!
All of the seams are taped and zippers are sealed on this Columbia Omni Tech jacket so well that even in the rain, everything stays out, just as it should. I’d recommend this coat in an instant! Now, 8 years after our initial testing, I am still wearing this coat. It’s easily the highest quality coat that I’ve ever owned and I fully anticipate getting 5+ more years of use out of it (the waterproofing isn’t performing as well as it once did, but I consider that normal – Is Columbia Omni tech waterproof – yes, but as with most coatings, its performance diminishes with time).
Columbia Omin Heat thermal reflective worked great in this womens jacket, but the Omni-heat reflective didn’t work as well with other pieces that we tried.

The area where I think the Omni heat technology has the biggest opportunity to really keep people warm is with footwear. In our family, we get cold feet REALLY easily, and from all our Omni Heat testing, those little reflective dots perform their best in small spaces where the heat can be well preserved…just like you would find in a boot or a shoe.
This sort of technology does best at certain things so it’s a great fit for winter shoes and boots where you know that warmth is an important factor. The Science Behind Omni-Heat
To break it down simply, Omni-Heat works in almost exactly the same way as a ‘space blanket’, those metallic sheets given to marathon runners at the end of a race or to hypothermia victims by mountain rescue teams. Despite their extremely low weight and bulk, space blankets are so efficient that they can reflect up to 97 per cent of radiated heat. ‘You would never want to wear one of those, though – especially next to your skin, because it’s crinkly and uncomfortable and you’d sweat a lot,’ explains Jeff Mergy, director of global innovation at Columbia. ‘So we thought, “How can we create something that provides the benefits that this blanket does, but make it comfortable, breathable, and so that it can dissipate sweat if you’re being active?”’
That’s why in Omni-Heat garments, the reflective material is applied in a dot pattern rather than as a continuous sheet. But why focus on this, rather than on fabrics or fill, like almost everyone else? ‘The reason we tackled heat reflection is because a lot of other heat technologies, like insulation and down, only work by conduction,’ adds Mergy. ‘They hold heat inside of them and eventually max out because there’s only so much heat they can hold.’

To understand this, you need to know that the human body loses heat in five different ways. First is evaporation: water cooling the skin, either through sweating or if wearing wet clothing. Then there’s conduction, when heat moves from a warmer surface to a cooler one (which is why you get cold when sleeping on bare ground). Next is convection, basically, ‘wind chill’. There’s also respiration: breathing out warm air from inside the body.
Lastly there’s radiation, which is the process of heat moving away from the body in cold air temperatures. Heat loss through evaporation and respiration increases in dry, windy weather conditions, while wet clothing greatly increases heat loss through conduction and evaporation. But in normal conditions, the body loses 65% of its heat through radiation, making this by far the biggest factor. ‘Knowing that the largest amount of heat that the human body gives off is through radiation, we decided to focus on that and a way to use that to warm us up,’ says Mergy.

Of course, in the decade since Omni-Heat first appeared, Columbia has expanded the core technology. Omni-Heat remains the brand’s optimum solution for prolonged exposure to cold during activities requiring lightweight warmth.
